Role of Technology in Stopping Women Harassment: Are they really being Adopted?

The evolution of technology has engineered the progress of our civilization. Everyday newer forms of technology are emerging to solve our daily life problems. While some technologies have made our lives easier, there are some that failed to make such impression. Technologies that tackle daily life women harassment are truly appreciated, but adoption of these technologies is still questionable.

Women Harassment has been an alarming nuisance of recent time. Although the general perception regarding woman is changing due to empowerment of women, there’s still this harassment issue in every sector of our world. Now-a-days it is almost a common event in newspapers or bulletins that a woman is being harassed. Even worse news has shaken our human identity. The very laurels of morality and humanity are questioned when such incidents like rape, murder and other forms of harassment occur.

Available Solutions

Technology can be a glimmer of hope in this scenario. There are technological solutions that can tackle this problem. A woman can choose from a wide array of solutions starting from smart devices to mobile applications. Smart devices like Athena, Safelet, Stiletto etc are available in world market. You may also choose mobile applications like watchoverme, safetipin etc.

Reasons behind Poor Adoption

While most of the available solutions are innovative and unique, are they really being adopted by women? We look into this poor technology adoption on why women are so reluctant adopting such means of protection. The answer to this appalling conundrum is not at all straight forward.

Firstly, lack of exposure and awareness to such technology or devices may be one of the imminent reasons. Woman especially in this part of the world, are not exposed to such solutions. They do not possess working knowledge of such technology should they face such harassment scenarios.

Poor infrastructure is another looming reason. Due to unstable internet connections and device shortage, sometimes woman do not want to adopt such technologies. Moreover, such devices are not readily available in rural areas. But mostly lack of knowledge and awareness about such devices is also key reason of poor adoption.

Last but not least, price of such technologies is also a major issue. The price tag for such solutions especially smart devices is lot to bear for women in third world countries. In this part of the world, where most of harassment are inflicted upon women, the price should be kept to a minimal.

In the context of Bangladesh, the Government and NGOs are not supportive enough to raise awareness among women about such preventive solutions. Rural areas of our country are fully in the dark about these kinds of anti-harassment devices and applications. This is why a lot of women suffer from harassment every day and the number is growing each day.

Woman harassment is a social problem. It is becoming a curse for women in our country as well. Raising awareness through campaigns and programs in every district can go a long way tackling this issue. The role of technology can also play a contributory part. All that is needed is the proper channel and guidance to use such technologies.
